Isuzu D-Max and Mazda BT-50: Same Face – Different Lipstick

If you’ve ever found yourself parked between an Isuzu D-Max and a Mazda BT-50 Boss and wondered which one to buy, the answer is surprisingly simple.

Pick the one you like looking at most. This was the easiest comparison test I’ve ever conducted, involving two utes wearing different uniforms.

Underneath the badges, these two are essentially identical. They share the same ladder-frame chassis, the same 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine, the same six-speed automatic transmission, and the same off-road hardware. Even the Rough Terrain traction system and four-wheel-drive components are common across both vehicles.

The BT-50 wears Mazda’s styling language and carries a slightly different cabin presentation, while the D-Max sticks with Isuzu’s more utilitarian approach. But when the bitumen ends and the dirt begins, they are fundamentally the same machine.

That’s no bad thing.

The proven 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel produces 140kW and 450Nm, and while it won’t pin you back in the seat, it delivers exactly what most ute buyers want: dependable, predictable performance. The engine pulls strongly from low revs, towing manners are excellent, and the six-speed automatic remains one of the better calibrations in the segment.

Isuzu . . .

Mazda . . .

Both vehicles feel solidly engineered – rugged comes to mind. Ride quality is composed by ute standards, steering is accurate enough, and off-road capability remains a genuine strength. Whether climbing rocky trails, negotiating deep ruts or simply tackling a wet campsite access road, both the D-Max and BT-50 inspire confidence.

Yet two frustrations stood out repeatedly during testing.

The first is the adaptive cruise control. While many rivals have refined these systems to near seamless operation, the Isuzu-Mazda setup still feels clumsy. It can be abrupt when responding to slower traffic and hesitant when accelerating back to a set speed. Instead of fading into the background, it frequently reminds you it’s working.

The second issue is the infotainment system. Modern vehicles should reduce driver workload, not add to it, yet both utes suffer from a touchscreen interface that is neither intuitive nor particularly user-friendly. Common functions can require multiple inputs, menu structures are not always logical, and there were too many occasions where more attention was devoted to the screen than the road ahead.

Those criticisms aside, these remain highly capable and durable dual-cabs. They offer strong towing credentials, genuine off-road ability and a reputation for reliability that has helped both models establish loyal followings across Australia.

Ultimately, the choice between them comes down to styling, dealership preference and equipment levels rather than engineering. Strip away the badges and you’re looking at the same ute wearing a different shirt.

And that’s probably the biggest compliment either manufacturer could receive.

The reality is that choosing between a D-Max Blade and a BT-50 Boss is less about engineering and more about whether you prefer the Isuzu dealer down the road or the Mazda showroom across town.
